The Zambia YMCA support involved not only mobilising the processional march but engaging the corporate and business sectors in the Kitwe region. The campaign is reported to have successfully raised funds to the value of US$6 000, in the Kitwe region alone. The Zambia YMCA president, Mr Thabo Kawana had called on other stakeholders to partner with YMCA and help raise awareness on the importance of early childhood development. He highlighted the importance of partnerships which fosters awareness and building of young people especially with the focus on the girl- child.
The Zambian Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Hon Kampamba Mulenga, attended the initiative and urged women in the country to step up efforts of raising awareness of early childhood development as well. She further highlighted that the weakest members of society are children as they need to be protected, nurtured and provided for until the grow because they have less physical strength and capability to defend themselves.
The journey of the duo is expected to end in September 2017 having covered six countries.
The mission of the Zambia YMCA is to translate the principles of YMCA’s Christian heritage into programmes that develop children/youth, strengthen families, and build strong communities.
